24 Pages is all about showcasing the creative and innovative voices of GCU students. We’re building a bold, student-run magazine that is a place for all sorts of artistic expression. We want to empower contributors to take risks, push their craft, and work together across different fields.
This issue’s main focus is typography with a 3D twist. We gathered writing pieces from students all over campus. They didn’t need to be professional writing students, just people with a story to tell. Each chosen piece was given to a designer to study and interpret to bring the stories to life visually. The 3D effect became an element to make viewers look even deeper into the words written on the page. You may need to squint, close one eye, or stare at it for a long time. We wanted to stop people in their tracks, and take the time to truly look at something in this fast paced world.
Dear Freshman Me by Owen Ekstrom reflects on his college experience while offering advice to his freshman self. The piece functions as a mirror, inviting readers to reflect on their own college journeys. The feeling of closure strongly influenced my design approach. I chose an end-credit style to evoke the feeling of a story or chapter of life coming to a close. The bold typography and emphasis on certain words reinforces the piece’s central message. And ensures its impact remains clear, even for readers who may only skim the page. Ultimately, the design is meant to leave readers with a sense of reflection and fondness for all that they have accomplished.
